A total of 1,876 silver coins from the British era have been unearthed in Chuadanga, weighing approximately 21.9 kilograms, according to local police.

The discovery occurred on Saturday morning when Shahidul Islam, a local resident of Karpasdanga Bazar in Damurhuda upazila, was excavating land to construct a shop. While using a dredger machine, a brass pot emerged from the soil. Inside, they found a large number of silver coins. Curious locals quickly gathered at the site, prompting police and administrative officials to rush to the scene with necessary equipment.

The coins are believed to date back to the British period, ranging from 1865 to 1908. The find has been described by many locals as a "hidden treasure."

Local goldsmiths have estimated the value of each silver coin between Tk 1,500 and Tk 1,800 based on silver content alone. However, considering their historical significance, the total value could be much higher.

Shahidul’s son, Mehedi Hasan Manik, said they were digging about four feet deep when the machine brought up the brass pot. Upon noticing the coins, they immediately informed the police.

Officer-in-Charge of Damurhuda Model Police Station, Humayun Kabir, confirmed the recovery. The coins have been taken into police custody and will be handed over to the government treasury following legal procedures.

The discovery has created widespread excitement and curiosity among the locals, who are calling it a rare glimpse into the region’s colonial past.
