Zakir’s ODI debut dream shatters for injury

Zakir Hasan ruled out from the ODI series against Ireland as the batter injured his left thumb during practice today at the Sylhet International Stadium.

He was called up to the ODI team for the first time. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confimed that Zakir will take about two weeks to recover. As a result, he will miss his opportunity to wear national ODI team jersey.

“Zakir injured his left thumb while batting in the nets today. An X-ray has shown a minor undisplaced fracture which could take around two weeks to recover from. Unfortunately, this means he will not be available for the ODI series” National Team physio Bayjedul Islam Khan said.

BCB has announced the squad for the first two ODIs so far. Zakir may recover before the only Test at the beginning of next month. The batter has played one international T20 along with two Tests in his career.

The Bangladesh team reached Sylhet this morning with the series against Ireland in front.

The team went to practice in the afternoon. Zakir, however, was already there to play a warm-up match for the BCB XI against Ireland.

A few days ago, Zakir could not play the third round and final match of the Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) due to a hamstring injury. After recovering from that injury, he played a warm-up match for the BCB XI against Ireland yesterday [Wednesday].

Right-handed batter Rony Talukdar has been named as Zakir’s replacement in the ODI squad named for the first two matches of the series.
