An alleged Yaba trader was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Rasel Mahmud, 36, son of Foyez Ahmad of North Lakhanghona area of Bandar thana of Narayanganj district.
The incident took place at about 4:30 am on Saturday near Hill Station of Whykong Union of Teknaf. At the time, police recovered a locally made gun, 5000 pieces of Yaba tablets from the spot.
Pradip Kumar Das, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Teknaf Police Station, confirmed the matter. He said that on information, police conducted raid at night to arrest Amir Hamza, son of Abul Hossain of Dinakata area who run his illegal trade in Whykong union of Teknaf. Sensing presence of law enforces, a group of miscreants shot fire on the police. Police also fired counter for save themselves.
OC Pradeep further said that Rasel came from Narayanganj to buy Yaba from dealer Amir Hamza of Teknaf.
The miscreants escaped from the spot, after seeing a young man lying on the spot, police rescued him and sent him to Teknaf Health Complex. Later, he was sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital where the on duty doctors declared him dead, the OC said.
Sub Inspector Borhan Uddin Bhuiyan, Constable Habib Hossain, Sajib Sarkar and Tuhin Hasan were injured.
A case was filed with the Teknaf police station in this connection.
