‘Yaba trader’ killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

A suspected yaba trader was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Katakhali in Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar early on Monday.  

The deceased was identified Mofizur Rahman Mofiz, 41, son of Golam Alkber, former member of Katakhali UP. 

Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station, said police arrested Mofizur recently and after interrogation, police along with the arrestee conducted a drive in the area at dawn to seize the Yaba pills.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the associates of Mofizur opened fire on the policemen, prompting them to fire back that triggered a gunfight.

At one stage, Mofizur was caught in the line of fire and sustained bullet injuries.

Later, he succumbed to his injuries on way to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.

Three policemen were injured during the gunfight.
