A woman tried to commit suicide reportedly after killing her minor daughter in the city’s Maniknagar area early Monday.
The deceased was identified as three-and-half-year-old Ruja Fardin, daughter of late Manjur Hasan Russel.
Ruksana Akhter Rumi used to live at a house of Miazan Goli in Maniknagar under Mugda Police Station along with her daughter Ruja.
Being informed, police recovered Ruja’s body from Mugda General Hospital around 12:15pm and sent it to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for postmortem, said sub-inspector (SI) Md Fazal Mahmud of the police station.
The body was handed over to relatives in the afternoon following the autopsy, he said.
Quoting locals, the police officer said Ruksana fed her daughter with food laced with either pesticide or sedative and then she herself took it sometime after Sunday midnight.
As they fell sick, they were taken to Mugda General Hospital where Ruja died around 12:15pm while Ruksana was undergoing treatment at the hospital, Fazal said.
