Two security guards allegedly killed Chinese businessman Gao Jianhui at his rented flat in the capital Dhaka to loot his money and valuables. Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Detective Branch) Abdul Baten made this claim at a press briefing at DMP Media Center in the city on Wednesday.

Earlier on December 11, police found body of 50-year-old Chinese businessman Gao. He was found buried in the garden of his Banani apartment complex. On the same day, police detained two security guards Abdur Rauf, 27 and Enamul Haque, 27 for grilling. They were shown arrest in the case on Tuesday.

In the press briefing DB chief said, “The guards were frustrated because of poverty and wanted to become rich overnight. They planned the murder, assuming that Gao had a lot of money as he was a foreigner.” They tried to kill him once before, but failed, Baten added. Gao used to supply stones and other construction materials to the Padma Bridge and Payra Port projects. He had been living in the flat for one year.

Law enforcers recovered a broken mobile set, a towel and water bucket used during the killing and other materials used in burying the body, alongside Tk1.21 lakh cash in their possession, said Abdul Baten. He said Rouf and Enamul admitted that they killed the foreigner during primary interrogation. They planned the murder together and executed it, he added.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Golam Saklain Sithil, who led the whole operation said, “Rouf joined as a security guard of the building one month back while Enamul joined 15 days ago. Both of them lived together at the rooftop of the building. That is how they fast became friends.”

Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Shajahan Shaju, who supervised the special drive said, “The two guards became envious of the luxurious lifestyles of the rich residents of the building. At one point, they came to know that Chinese national Gao was very rich and lives alone in his apartment; and kept money in his room. They then made the plan to kill Gao and steal his money.”

Deputy Commissioner of DB (North) Moshiur Rahma, who instructed the special operation said, “On December 6, they tried to kill Gao but was not successful. They pressed the calling bell of the flat but returned in fear as no one responded.” On December 10, they went again and pressed the calling bell of Gao's flat around 5 or 6pm. When Gao opened the door, he looked at them with astonishment.

Gao gestured to the duo with his hands to ask what the matter was as he did not know Bangla or English language, he further added. Enamul responded that they wanted to drink water. Enamul wrapped the towel around Gao's neck and Rouf grabbed him by the waist on entering the apartment. After killing him they took Tk 3.49 lakh and his mobile phone. They went back to their place after that.

Around 11pm at night Rouf dug a pit in the backyard of the building as he was on duty that night. Later he buried Gao's body with the help of another guard, DC Moshiur added.
