Two ‘criminals’ killed in Sylhet ‘gunfights’

A suspected robber and an alleged terrorist were killed in two separate gunfights with police and RAB at Bishwanath and Golapganj upazilas in Sylhet early on Saturday.

The suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Surirkhal area of Bishwanath upazila.

Shamim Musa, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bishwanath Police Station, said that on information, they conducted a raid in the area at about 3:30am. The robber gang opened fire when police reached the area, triggering a gunfight. One of the robbers was killed in the gunfight while others managed to flee, the OC said.

The OC claimed that three policemen were injured in the gunfight. Police claimed that they also recovered a pipe gun from the spot.

Meanwhile, the suspected terrorist was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Kadurpur village of Golapganj upazila. The deceased was identified Ali Hossain, 40, resident of the area. He was wanted in several criminal cases including murder.

RAB-9 additional police super (media) Moniruzzaman said that Ali Hossain and his associates opened fire when the elite force was conducting a raid in the area at about 12:30am. 

RAB managed to arrest five people after the skirmish, but Ali was killed there. A member of RAB was also injured at the gunfight, he claimed.
