The container loaded MV Haiyan City ship collided with the MT Orion Express in the Kutubdia Channel and tilted 7 degrees.  The damaged MV Haiyan City ship carrying 1156 export containers, 20 feet long, was later brought safely to Karnafhuli Drydock Jetty.  Now the containers are being unloaded safely.

The ship was safely berthed on Wednesday at the port with the help of Tug Kandari, Lusai, Survey-11, Barshan, Prantik Sarwar and Mooring Boat Sandwip.

The ship was brought to Karnafuli Drydock Jetty on Wednesday.  Chattogram Port Authority Secretary Md. Umar Faruq confirmed the information.

The MT Orion Express collided with a ship near Kutubdia on April 14 while leaving the port.  At this time, the ship tilted 7 degrees due to a hole in the cargo hold at the port side of Haiyan City.  The draft increased to 10.7 meters due to inflow of water.  The attempt is to drown.  The ship was anchored in Kutubdia area on special initiative.

According to port sources, the value of the exported containers in Haiyan City is around Tk 800 crore.  The container must be unloaded to repair the ship.  Therefore, ignoring the Eid holidays and inclement weather, the Port Chairman Rear Admiral M Shahjahan had a quick coordination meeting with senior port officials, ship owners' representatives, local agents, salvage agencies, P&I, navy, coastguard and others concerned and decided to berthing the ship.

After that custom permit was taken to unload the container at Karnafhuli Drydock Jetty.  Suitable dredging of 10.7 m draft was completed at the jetty foreshore.  The ship was then berthed at Karnafhuli Drydock Jetty with the help of skilled piloting, tug, local naval technology and international standard salvage company Prantik Bengal Service of the port's naval division.

Port users say the port authorities have set an example by rescuing the ship.  The ship's sinking would have tarnished the country's image in the maritime world in addition to the huge financial losses, just as the ship's sinking saved 800 million rupees worth of exports due to the port's bold and wise decision.  Readymade garment exporters have breathed a sigh of relief.

Chattogram Port Member (Harbor and Marine) Commodore Md. Mostafizur Rahman supervised the rescue operation led by Port Chairman Rear Admiral M Shahjahan.  The rescue operation was supervised by Deputy Conservator Capt. Faridul Alam, Harbor Master Capt. Md. Zahirul Islam, Assistant Harbor Master Capt. Abu Sayed Md. Kamrul Alam.

Port Director (Transport) Enamul Karim said that for the first time in the history of Chattogram Port, containers are being unloaded at a private jetty on the south bank of Karnafhuli river, which is dependent on tidal flows outside GCB, CCT and NCT.  For this purpose 16 ton capacity 1 fork lift, 8 spreaders, 4 trailers, logistics support of berth operator and a fleet of equipment have been sent to the jetty.

Chattogram Port Authority Secretary Md. Umar Faruq said the MV Haiyan City ship carrying goods collided with another ship while leaving the port.  This caused a hole in the cargo hold of the ship and the water entered and the ship tilted 7 degrees.  Now the weather in the sea is not good.  On top of that, the 1156 containers on the ship contain goods worth about Tk 800 crore.  So we quickly brought the MotherVessel to the jetty by tugboat.  Representatives of ship owners, local agents, salvage agencies, P&I, Navy, Coast Guard have assisted us in this.
