Tk 25 lakh timber seized in Ctg

Chattogram North Forest Department and Coast Guard East Zone jointly seized illegal teak and other species of timber worth about Tk 25 lakh in the operation.

 The truck carrying a large quantity of illegal timber was seized from an area called Kaptai Road Head of Chandgaon Police Station in Chattogram on Wednesday night.

 City Range Officer of Chattogram North Forest Department Nazmul Hasan Masud confirmed this information on Thursday morning.

 Range officials said a special operation was conducted under the direction of Divisional Forest Officer Mozammel Haque Shah Chowdhury on the basis of information obtained from secret sources.  

During the operation, the Coast Guard with the help of an expedition team from East Zone seized a truck numbered Chatrametro DHA-11-1474 loaded with illegal teak wood, gamari and karoii from Kaptai Road Head of Chandgaon Police Station.  Illegal timber worth about Tk 25 lakh was seized from the truck.  

The seized timber and trucks are in the custody of the North Forest Department.  City Range Officer Nazmul Hasan said a case was being filed with the forest department in this regard.

 It may be mentioned that Coast Guard and the Forest Department conducted a joint operation and seized another truck loaded with round timber from the Bahaddarhat area of the city on last Tuesday.  The estimated value of the timber seized in this operation is around Tk 20 lakh.  

Chattogram North Forest Department official Mozammel Haque Shah Chowdhury said the ongoing operation to curb illegal timber smuggling would continue.
