Three friends succeed in off-season watermelon farming in Thakurgaon

Three friends from Pirganj area of Thakurgaon have succeeded in cultivating watermelon on bamboo fences.

Golam Rabbani Rubel, a successful farmer in the village of Pirganj upazila of Thakurgaon, used to grow watermelon on the ground like other crops. 

However, after watching the exception of watermelon cultivation on bamboo fence, he directly inspired to visit the watermelon field in Chandpur and returned to the area and became interested in cultivating watermelon on bamboo fence.

Moreover, with this interest his friends Ranju Sarkar and Shahidullah started cultivating watermelon on bamboo fence together. Watermelon saplings are usually planted in this area during winter and are sold in summer. Uses high quality polyethylene, they cultivated black box and sagor king seeds, which in a short time sprouted out as saplings.

Each watermelon weighs 5-7 kgs and is delicious to eat. The watermelon has already sold for Tk 12 lakhs. They are expecting to sell the remaining watermelons for about Tk 3 lakhs.

Seeing the success of Rubel in cultivating watermelon in bamboo fence, local farmers Arefin Mamun, Aminul Islam, inspired in watermelon cultivation, and are also thinking of cultivating watermelon in this way.

In this regard, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) said that some farmers in Pirganj area of the district have grown watermelon in bamboo fence. If the new method is spreading across the country, one-day watermelon cultivation will be available throughout the year and on the other hand, farmers will be benefitted.
