Three die of dengue in Dhaka, Barishal

Mosquito-borne viral disease dengue killed three more people, including two minors, in the capital and Barishal on Friday. Mehraz Hasan, 8, and Rifat, 10, died at Dhaka hospitals. The death of Mujibur Rahman Mollah, 52, was reported from Barishal.Mehraz, undergoing treatment at the United Hospital, died around 859am. Rifat, son of Khorshed from Jamalpur, was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Thursday night. He died in the early hours of Friday, hospital sources said.

Mujibur died at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital around 2am. He was hospitalised around 1130pm on Thursday, said Dr Bakir Hossain, director of the hospital.The government is grappling with a growing number of dengue cases and most them are being reported from Dhaka, the densely-populated megacity at the centre of the outbreak.

A total of 2,002 people were hospitalised with dengue infection in 24 hours until Friday morning, the government said. Of these, 943 cases were reported from Dhaka alone.Since January, 36,668 patients were admitted to hospitals with dengue and 27,876 made full recovery, the government said.At least 8,763 patients, including children, are undergoing treatment at hospitals and of them, 5,076 are in Dhaka.Official data show the death toll as 29 but unofficial estimates suggest the number is higher.
