The amount of freedom enjoyed by the media in Bangladesh and the development of the media in the last 12 years is an example for many developing countries, said the Minister of Information and Broadcasting Dr Hasan Mahmud.

The minister said this while unveiling the cover of a book titled ‘Anashwar Bangabandhu' compiled by the Information Department on the occasion of the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, online from his official residence on Minto Road in the capital on Wednesday afternoon.

State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Dr Murad Hassan, Secretary Md Mokbul Hossain, Chief Information Officer Surath Kumar Sarkar and senior PID officials took part in the virtual event.

At this time, 'various organizations from time to time give various statements and reports on the media and human rights issues of different countries, which do not match the reality' in response to the question of the journalists, Hassan Mahmood said, “There are some organizations in the world that sell statements. We have seen in recent times that some organizations are making statements about the context of Bangladesh. These are not original statements or reports, they are giving these in a special context, with a special purpose, at the persuasion of a special court, and sometimes they are also selling statements”.

Selling statements or publishing reports in the name of human rights organizations is not conducive to the development of human rights but goes against the protection of human rights, said Dr. Hasan Mahmud.

The Information Minister said that no other developing country enjoys such freedom as the media enjoys in Bangladesh. The amount of accountability in all the countries from which such statements or reports are made, is not present in our country.

Any misrepresentation there will result in a hefty fine. Newspapers are often shut down for spreading false or untrue news, as has been the case with News of the World. Many times the whole television team has to resign, as has been the case with the BBC. That does not happen in our country, he added.

Thanking the Information Department for publishing the book 'Anashwar Bangabandhu', the Minister said, "As many writings, poems and books on Bangabandhu will be published, our history will be enriched, our new generation will be enriched, they will know Bangabandhu, will know the history of Bangladesh's rise."

Hasan Mahmud the Joint General Secretary of the Awami League, said, "In this age when people are becoming very self-centered and selfish, it is necessary to look back at how our predecessors created the country by sacrificing their lives in the name of the father of the nation. Everyone will know the history of how Bangabandhu inspired an unarmed nation and gave its life for the country from such books”.

State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Dr Murad Hassan said, to know the identity of Bengali nationality, one must learn about Bangabandhu first.
