‘Terrorists kill’ Chakma leader in Rangamati

‘11 murdered since Jan 2020 by JSS armed cadres’

Jana Samhati Samiti (JSS) terrorists allegedly shot a Chakma leader dead in Lulangchhari area under Jurachhari upazila of Rangamati on Sunday night.

The deceased was identified as Pathur Moni Chakma, 60, the village head of No. 1 Lulangchhari area of the upazila.

Talking to the Bangladesh Post, an officer concerned of Bangladesh Army confirmed the matter on Monday afternoon.

Md Shafiul Azam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jurachhari Police Station said that a group of unidentified gunmen shot Pathur Chakma dead at his house in Lulangchhari area around 9:15 pm on Sunday, leaving him dead on the spot.

Quoting witness, he also said, “Armed miscreants surrounded the house and shot him while he was chatting with his family members at his house at night. Multiple bullet wounds were found on his body.”

The OC further said that police visited the spot after getting the information. 

According to the local people, Pathar Moni Chakma played a significant role in the development of the area as a Chakma community leader.

He was always vocal against all kinds of illegal activities and terrorism in the area.

According to the credible sources, since January 2020, more than eleven people have been killed in Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) by the terrorists of JSS (Santu Larma) group.

After the latest killing of Pathur Moni Chakma, Bangladesh Army has intensified patrolling activities in the area. Currently, a tensed situation has been prevailing in the area.

Credible sources said that Karbari Pathar Moni Chakma had been facing threats from the JSS terrorists for last few months. He left his home and stayed few months at his son’s residence in Gazipur. He retuned Rangamati recently and was killed shortly after returning from Gazipur.

In the wake of the killing of the popular Chakma community leader, locals demanded stern action against the armed terrorist forces of the JSS (Santu Larma).
