A teen female student allegedly committed suicide by wrapping a scarf around her neck at Kalikaprasad village under Moktarerchar union in Naria upazila of Shariatpur on Tuesday night.
The deceased was identified as Swarna Akter, 18, daughter of Swapan Dewan of Kalikaprasad village.
She passed Higher Secondary Certificate examination from Naria Upasi College.
Swarna's father works for a company in the capital and her mother has been living in Jordan for a long time. Swarna used to live with her grandmother in the village, sources said.
Rahima Begum, Swarna's grandmother, said that Swarna could not be found around 9:30pm on Tuesday. She started looking for her and saw the kitchen door closed. She broke the door with the help of locals. Inside the kitchen, they found Swarna hanging, who was still alive then.
She died after a short while after they brought her down on the floor. Later, police came and took away the body. However, the reason behind her suicide could not be known immediately.
Naria Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Hafizur Rahman confirming the news said the body was sent to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. An unnatural death case has been registered with the police station in this regard, he added.
