Cultivation of sugarcane at five upazilas under Gazipur district is gaining popularity. Farmers are being financially benefited through its cultivation.
Meanwhile, sugarcane farming has proved to be more lucrative than other crops. A good number of farmers of Gazipur district have started cultivating sugarcane on their lands.
They hope to get bumper output. According to Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), 1505 hectors of land has been brought under sugarcane cultivation in all five upazilas of Gazipur district this year.
Most of the areas have been selected at Kapasia upazila . Mobarak Husain, 45, a sugarcane grower at Piruzali village of Gazipur Sadar told that he had cultivated the Rangbilas variety sugarcane on two bighas of his land and expecting to earn over Taka 75 thousand this season by selling his produce. About 13000 to TK 15000 is needed to cultivate sugarcane on two bighas of land.
A single piece of sugarcane is sold at Tk 25 to 45 in local market. It will be satisfactory and profitable sale, he added. Once Mobarak Husain was at a loss to bear his 4 members of family`s expenses . Many other farmers of Gazipur area also involved in growing sugarcane. Deputy Director of DAE, Gazipur, Md Mahbub Alam informed sugarcane cultivation is increasing day by day in Gazipur. Mechanical devices are also available for extracting sugarcane juice. Md Mahbub Alam added that sugarcane farmers get support from them.
