Sunamganj Sadar Hospital is facing severe doctor shortage. As many as 5 doctors were working in the hospital, but now, 1 doctor is providing health services that are causing chaos and problems among patients.

The maternity department of Sunamganj Sadar Hospital has 17 beds. But every day, 35-50 patients are being admitted. The ward is authorized to have gynecologist, residential surgeon, junior consultant, indoor medical officer and assistant registrar. Only one junior consultant is working at the hospital.

Taslima Begum, who came to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital for her gyneo treatment said, "I came to the hospital at 10 am on Sunday. However, as there is only one doctor, he is occupied with a lot of patients. Don’t know when my serial will come.”

Lipika Das, junior consultant at gyneo and maternity department said, “Health services had been badly affected with the number of patients increasing every day. The outpatient department has to administer 20-25 patients daily. After I started working over here, the caesarian patients have increased from 427 in 2018 and till August 2019, there were 299 caesarian patients. How is it possible for a doctor to tackle such? I get frustrated at times.”

Sunamganj Civil Surgeon Dr Ashutosh Das said there is only one junior consultant in the gyneo and maternity department. It is impossible for one to do everything alone, and so service delivery had also been affected due to lack of doctors. He said no initiative had been taken from either the department concerned even though they had been informed about the problems.
