Speaker of Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Tuesday urged parliamentarians to play a vital role in enhancing cooperation among Eurasian countries for sustainable development, reports BSS.

“It is very important to share experiences among the Eurasian countries apart from expanding economic, cultural and technological cooperation among Eurasian countries in order to make development sustainable,” the speaker said while addressing the 4th meeting of Speakers of Eurasian Countries Parliamentarians in Nur-Sultan, capital of Kazakhstan.

Dr Shirin said Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is moving forward. As a result, the poverty rate has dropped to 21 percent from 40 percent as the present government took initiatives for welfare of the people. Bangladesh will be able to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) along with continuation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), she added.

The Speaker urged the international community to take effective steps to resolve the Rohingya crisis, saying Myanmar has to establish a suitable environment for ensuring peaceful repatriation of Rohingya people, who have been forcibly displaced from their motherland Rakhine state in Myanmar in August, 2017. “Greater Eurasia: Dialogue, Trust and Partnership” is the theme of the two-day conference that began on Monday.

Representatives from 65 countries of the Eurasian region and representatives from 12 international and inter-parliamentary organisations are attending the conference. A delegation comprising lawmakers JS Whip Iqbalur Rahim, Abdullah Al Islam Jacob, Begum Sagufta Yasmin, Bodruddoza Md Farhad Hossain and Awami League Central Working Committee member Advocate ABM Riazul Kabir Kawsar, are accompanying the speaker.
