Six die after taking spirit in Noakhali, 2 held

At least six people died after taking spirit at Bashurhat of Companiganj upazila in Noakhali from Thursday night to Friday evening.

The deceased were identified as Mohin Uddin, 40, son of Foyej Ahmed of Mohammad Nagar village; Nur Nabi Manik, 50; Rabi Lal Roy, 57, and Omar Faruq Liton, 40, residents of ward no:8 under Basurhat Municipality, Abdul Khaleq, 72, from Charkakra union, and Sabuj, 60, from Sirajpur union at the upazila.

Families of the deceased claimed their relatives died of a heart attack. But if anyone dies after drinking spirit, then the person or people who sell the spirits should be arrested and brought under the law.

According to local sources, some people bought rectified spirit from 'Rafique Homeo Hall' at Bashurhat Bazar and fell sick after taking it.

Hospital sources said that police recovered two bodies and sent them to the morgue for autopsy on Saturday morning. However, the hospital authorities said the cause of death could not be ascertained till their autopsy report is received.

Noakhali police superintendent Alamgir Hossain confirmed the death of two people and detained two people. Meanwhile, the body of Rabi Lal Roy and Nur Nabi Manik were recovered while preparing for burial in Basurhat Municipal area. The bodies were sent to Noakhali General Hospital for autopsy.

Police, however, detained the shop owner Jayed and his son Piyam in this connection.
