Single use plastic items to be forbidden in Sundarbans

No tourists’ will be allowed to visit the Sundarbans taking single use plastic items with them. Due to the use of single use plastic, the environment and biodiversity are being severely damaged.  A special programme has been taken to stop the use of single use plastic in 40 upazilas of 12 coastal districts of the country.

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin said this while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion titled “The Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s historical leadership and development of the country” organised at the Department of Environment on the occasion of the Great Independence and National Day 2023 on Monday.

The minister has also instructed the secretary of the ministry to take necessary steps to stop the use of single-use plastic in the Sundarbans.  

The Environment Minister said that a leader like Bangabandhu is rare in the world.  He dedicated his whole life for freedom.  He took the war-torn country to a stage of development.  He started work to build a non-discriminatory and non-communal country.  Cruel Pakistanis could not kill him but some misguided people of this country killed him and his family.  

The minister said that the dream of the father of the nation is being materialised by his able daughter, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, to put smiles on the faces of helpless people.  He said to the officials that under the leadership of Prime Minister, everyone should work unitedly to build a smart Bangladesh.  Common people should be respected.  The common people, the owner of the country, should be served well.

Deputy Minister Begum Habibun Nahar, Secretary Dr Farhina Ahmed and Additional Secretary Iqbal Abdullah Harun spoke as special guests in the discussion chaired by Director General of Environment Directorate Dr Abdul Hamid.  Additional Director General of the Department of Environment Kazi Abu Taher, Director Mirza Shawkat Ali also spoke, among others.
