Former batsman ShahnewazShahidhas been appointed as the interim head coach of Bangladesh women’s cricket team. BCB women’s wing chairmanNadel Chowdhury confirmed the media on Sunday.

Shahnewaz, the former middle-order batsman, will be in-charge of the women’s team during the upcoming Bangladesh Games followed by the home series against South Africa Emerging side, who are scheduled to arrive on March 28 to play five one-day games.

“We have appointed Shahnewaz as our head coach on interim basis with the home series against South Africa Emerging side after the Bangladesh Games,”Shafiul told Cricbuzz.

BCB have also spoken with the Olympic Association and included three-team 50 over competition in the Bangladesh Games, scheduled from March 6 to 12, in place of T20s so that women cricketers can have some practice.

“The Bangladesh Games is the preparation ground ahead of the home series against South Africa as we have not played cricket for a long time. Because we have ICC World Cup Qualifier in 50-over format as well as the series against the tourists in 50-over format, we have asked BOA to change the format for us that was initially planned to be a T20 affair,”Shafiul said.

Shafiul said that he is confident of hiring a foreign head coach before they begin their ICC World Cup Qualifier campaign and added that he was disappointed that Mark Robinson decided not to join at the last minute citing family reasons.

BCB was confident of replacing Anju Jain with Robinson following her departure after Bangladesh’s dismal show in the ICC Women’s Twenty20 World Cup in Australia, where Bangladesh lost all four of their group-stage matches in the tournament.

“Robinson was expected to come but eventually it didn’t work out due to the corona issue,” said Shafiul of the former England women’s team head coach who is currently working in the same capacity for Warwickshire.
