Service sector earns $4.32bn in Jul-Mar

Bangladesh’s export earnings from the service sector reached $4.32 billion in the July-March period of the current fiscal year, according to an Export Promotion Bureau data released on Monday. The amount is 44 percent higher than that earned in the correspondent period of the previous fiscal. The sector maintains the growth momentum largely on the back of transportation, travel, construction services, telecommunication and Information Services and other business services.

Manufacturing services on physical inputs owned by others went up 951.32 percent year-on-year to 146.87 million in July-March-2019. Maintenance and repair services export was less by 12.21 percent year-on-year to $3.81 million in July-March of FY 2019. Earning from shipment of transportation rose by 19.02 percent to $513.07 million.

Sea transportation brought in $228.84 million, growing 12.19 percent year-on-year. Export of air transport services items increased 25.61 percent and road transport services decrease 61.79 percent respectively. Export of travel services increased by 4.45 percent year-on-year to $279.58 million in the period.
Within the same category, exports of business services grew by 47.89 percent and personal services increased by 4.33 percent.

Export of construction services increased by 331.60 percent year-on-year to $354.26 million from the same period a year ago. Export of insurance services decreased by 65.32 percent year-on-year to $0.43 million in July-March of FY 2019. Export of telecommunication and information services grew by 9.27 percent to $420.06 million.

In the category, computer services earnings increased by 23.60 percent to $163.58 million. Information services earning increased by 8.82 percent to $5.8 million. Export of personal, cultural and recreational services decreased by 2.04 percent to $12.02 million in the fiscal. According to EPB data, government goods and services exports fetched nearly $2 billion, up 46.56 percent during the July-March period last fiscal year.
