Newly-appointed Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam has instructed all senior officers to work at filed level to ease traffic jam in the capital. He made this remark while addressing a meet the press held at the DMP Media Center in the capital on Sunday.
He said, “I have already instructed all senior officials, including deputy commissioners, additional deputy commissioners and assistant commissioners to work in the fields to bring the traffic jam under control.”

“The traffic problem will not be solved if we depend on the sergeants and the traffic inspectors only,” he added. During the pick time, especially three hours before the offices start and three hours after offices break up, all senior officers will have to stay in the streets for controlling traffic jam, he further said.

“If my order is not carried out properly, we’ll distribute eight hours duty roster for officers fixing a specific point,” he warned. “Immediately after taking the charge, I have given some specific instructions for developing traffic management system. I talked to the officials of traffic department. I also took their suggestions in this regard,” he said. “I will remain tough in bringing traffic discipline. Those who have assigned to manage traffic, will bring under monitoring also.”

He however said it is very tough to maintain traffic system of the capital by only police. “I don’t know how much we’ll be successful. But we want to present our apparent attempt to bring a positive change in traffic system,” he added. “Not only for development projects of the government, for many other reasons traffic jam is being created.”

For example, crises are going on in two spots in the city today. Agitated garments workers are in the streets in one spot. In another spot, students are in the streets. It requires time to negotiate with them. Sometimes, it requires hours. If any road remains close only for five minutes, it affects for several hours in various parts of the city, he added.

He said, “People do not use foot over bridges. Instead, they pass through busy roads, which also create traffic jam.” “I asked senior officers to stop their cars at every zebra crossing. Then they will make people aware for using zebra crossing.” In Bangladesh, no one follow rules. Fifty cases can be lodged against a single bus when a bus reaches Gulisthan from Mirpur, he opined.
