A pleasant feeling of excitement is now running high among the students as the government is set to reopen the country’s all primary and high schools, and higher secondary (intermediate) colleges from September 12. After nearly 18 months of closure due to the Covid restrictions, the educational institutions are going to be reopened.

Education Minister Dipu Moni on Friday came up with this statement at a function in Chandpur district on Friday, the day after the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s speech in the parliament that measures are being taken to reopen the schools and colleges soon. It is worth mentioning that all state-run and private medical colleges will also reopen from September 13. Also, the university authorities are set to resume academic activities from October 15.

Over four crores of students from pre-primary to higher-education levels have been affected badly due to the prolonged closure caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. This closures and absence of in-person teaching and learning activities affected not only on students’ education but also on their health, protection and psychosocial well-being.

As soon as the news went viral, many students were seen dancing,  singing and welcoming the government as the long wait for reopening educational institutions is finally going to over in this current month.

Students are very happy to know that that they would be allowed to return to face-to-face learning at their respective educational institutions. Life during the pandemic has become difficult for parents and children alike as the closure led to cancellation of exams and left academic calendars in disarray.

The decision to reopen the educational

institutions is a bold, timely and important one

Teachers have already been given the jabs and their families and other workers in the schools have been also brought under the vaccination coverage. Besides, the university students have also been vaccinated. Measures are also being taken to inoculate the students of schools following the directives of the WHO.

We think the decision to reopen the educational institutions is a bold, timely and important one as the pandemic resulted in a “significant” learning loss for the students.

However, all must maintain the health guidelines necessary and initiatives must be taken to clean inside and outside of the educational institutions to contain the spread of coronavirus.
