Rohingya ‘robber’ killed in Teknaf ‘gunfight’

A suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Teknaf upazila of the district on Thursday.

The incident occurred at the hilly area near Shalbagan Rohingya camp in Nayapara of the union around 1 am.

The deceased was identified as Mahmudul Hasan 37, son of Baker Ahmed of Nayapara Rohingya camp. Three policemen were also injured in the gunfight.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Teknaf Police Station Pradip Kumar Das said that they arrested Mahmudul on Wednesday noon for possessing firearms.

Based on his information, a team of police, led by Additional Superintendent Redwan Ahmed, conducted a drive in the area along the Rohingya camp for recovering firearms.

Sensing the presence of the police, Mahmudul’s associates opened fire, leading to a gunfight. At one stage, Mahmudul was shot while others managed to flee.

Mahmudul succumbed to his injuries while being taken to the Sadar hospital. Four firearms, including a pistol, two magazines, 18 bullets and 13 cartridges were recovered from the scene.
