Rohingya drug trader killed in ‘gunfight’

A Rohingya drug trafficker was killed in a reported gunfight with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at  Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar in the early hours of Friday. Two BGB members were injured at the time and BGB recovered Yaba pills and local made weapon from the scene. The incident took place on the banks of Naf River in Jadimura area of Hnila union in Teknaf, said Lt. Colonel Faisal Hasan Khan, commander of BGB Teknaf Battalion-2.

 The deceased Rohingya youth was not identified but he is a resident of the Thaingkhali Rohingya camp in Ukhia. Lt. Colonel Faisal claimed that a BGB patrol team sighted several people pass with sacks on their head on the banks of the Naf River. When they ordered them to stop, they opened fire upon the BGB members. Then BGB members also fired upon them in self-defense. “The men were able to flee through the Kewra forest.

 Later, a sack, a local made riffle and a bullet were found at the scene. One lakh thirty thousand pieces of Yaba pills were found inside the sack. Two BGB members were injured in the fight” the commander said. The injured were taken to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex after being rescued by BGB, where the doctor referred the Rohingya man to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital. Later, the doctor on duty there declared him dead, he added.
