Robber killed in N’ganj ‘gunfight’

A suspected robber was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Ulumdi village at Araihazar upazila in Narayanganj early on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Abu Sayeed Choitka, 35, son of Nazim Mia of Jorkardia village under Araihazar Police Station.

According to police, he was accused in eight cases, including robbery, filed with Araihazar and Sonargaon police stations.

Officer-in-Charge of Araihazar Police Station Nazrul Islam said that earlier on Saturday afternoon; police arrested Abu Sayeed from his home. Later as per information given by him, a team of police went to the area to arrest other robbers. Sensing presence of policemen, the accomplices of Abu Sayeed opened fire, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate, he added.

During the “gunfight”, Abu Sayeed was hit by a bullet and died on the spot, the OC claimed.

His body was sent to Narayanganj General Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Police recovered a gun from the spot and other robbers managed to flee the scene, OC said.

Four cops of Araihazar Police Station – SI Siraj, 47, ASI Sabuk Chandra Das, Constables Lito Mia and Rafikul Islam -- were injured in the ‘gun battle’, the OC claimed.

Officer-in-Charge of Araihazar police station Nazrul Islam said that the slain robber was wanted by ten robbery cases with Sonargaon and Araihazar police stations.
