There have been drives against rickshaw a number of times in the past decades. Many rickshaws have been confiscated and destroyed for causing traffic congestion in the capital. Much of this has taken place due to the well organized initiatives of the government. However, the recent decision to prevent rickshaw plying in three major routes in the capital is definitely laudable.  On another note, now that no more rickshaws will be available on these roads for the public, some new problems are bound to arise in the loopholes of this decision.

Recent reports published in this daily suggest that there will be fewer rickshaws in the main streets of the capital. Just as there are benefits to this decision there will also be some predicaments. Aside from this, the decision to give the main roads of the capital to the authorised vehicles only should be appreciated. This will free up a lot of space on the roads which can be utilized properly by the public transports and also the privately owned vehicles.

The bigger and more powerful

 vehicles are often slowed down

to a crawl due to pile-up of rickshaws

Often times, it is seen that the manually pulled rickshaws are slower in comparison to the engine powered vehicles of the main roads. As a result, the bigger and more powerful vehicles are often slowed down to a crawl due to pile-up of rickshaws.

On another note, a number of questions have been raised by the public as to how the common people will commute in these routes without any rickshaws available for them. Are there going to be vehicles released on these roads to compensate for the lack of rickshaws? And, often times, the public transport service buses close their gates to prevent people getting onboard. What are the sufferers supposed to do then?

The authorities concerned should take note that no such suffering befalls the citizens on the streets of the capital. Appropriate steps should be taken to reduce the traffic congestion and also continue a free flow of traffic for the public’s ease.
