As a consequence of various agriculture-friendly policies implemented by the government, agricultural sector of Bangladesh has gone through a revolution in the last decade. We have registered remarkable growth in rice-production and invented high-yield crops. Also, Bangladesh has achieved self-sufficiency in food production. Indeed, being self-sufficient in food production is a great achievement for a country of 17 million people where more than 1252 people live per square kilometre.
We have quadrupled our rice production in the last 50 years and the incumbent government’s scheme of rural electrification has played an important role in boosting the country’s rice production. Reportedly, the rice production was only 10 million metric tonnes in 1971-72, but it has increased to about 40 million metric tonnes in 2020.
Far-sighted
initiatives should be taken so that the current
state of rice production can
be sustained
The average production of rice per hectare in 1991 was 1.71 tonnes and in 2020 rice production per hectare has increased to four tonnes on average.
The government should continue its efforts to sustain the momentum of the country’s rice production. Prudent measures should be taken so that the current state of rice production can be sustained and increased. We need to adopt advanced technologies in the agriculture sector in order to make our production growth sustainable.
In this regard, the public and private sector should work together and government should increase its invest in research and development of new technologies.
