Rice disease prevention seminar held at RU

A daylong seminar related to preventing diseases in rice was held at Rajshahi University (RU) today discussing and devising ways and means how to protect rice from all sorts of diseases.

RU Agriculture Faculty hosted the seminar titled "Genome Editing for Rice Diseases Resistance" at its deans' lounge with the participation of a large number of scientists and researchers in this field. Vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Golam Sabbir Sattar addressed the opening ceremony as the chief guest, while Pro-VCs Prof Sultan-Ul-Islam and Prof Humayun Kabir spoke as special guests with Dean of the Agriculture Faculty Prof Abdul Alim in the chair.

Biology Faculty Dean Prof Shahidul Alam and Prof Abdullah Muhammad Sohail from the Department of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering at Jahangirnagar University spoke as panel discussants disseminating their expertise on the issue.

 Lead Plant Pathologist Dr Van Seplar Lue from International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) gave an overview of the issue in Bangladesh.

Prof Ferdous Akter from the department of Agronomy and Agriculture Extension at RU moderated the discussion.

 In his remarks, Prof Golam Sabbir urged the scientists and researchers to give a proper guidelines to prevent rice diseases in Bangladesh as rice is the main staple food in the country.

 He expected full support from IRRI in this regard.
