A Sanctuary for Red Crab and Turtle was officially inaugurated at Kuakata sea beach in Patuakhali on Saturday noon to protect the biodiversity.
Kalapara Upazila Administration, Tourist Police Kuakata Zone and Tour Operators Association of Kuakata (TOAC) have implemented the sanctuary by red zoning half a kilometer area in Char Gangamati area on the east side and half a kilometer area at the mouth of three rivers on the west side of Kuakata sea beach under Ecofish-2 project of World Fish.
The project has been undertaken to maintain the balance of the environment by ensuring adequate red crab growth in the area and ensuring turtle laying eggs. The inaugural function was attended by Dhulasar Union Chairman AH Jalil Akon, Tour Operators TOAK President Ruman Imtiaz Tushar, Kalapara Upazila Assistant Fisheries Officer Mohsin Reza, Ecofish-2 Patuakhali District Assistant Researcher Sagarika Smriti and others.
TOAK President Ruman Imtiaz Tushar said, due to the lockdown, a lot of red crabs were seen roaming freely on both sides of the beach. The construction of the sanctuary will greatly increase its population, as well as give tourists a chance to see nature up close.
“As part of conserving biodiversity, we have taken the initiative to build red crab and turtle sanctuaries,” said Sagarika Smriti, an assistant researcher at Ecofish.
Red crab enhances soil quality and protects the balance of the environment. It is the responsibility of each and every one of us to take care of them, she added.
