Rebels may cause AL’s defeat in Katakhali municipality polls

The first phase of elections of Kanatakhali Municipality adjacent of Rajshahi city is going to be held soon.

Both Awami League and the BNP have declared the names of their mayoral candidates and the nomination papers for the expectant candidates have been submitted on Tuesday. The candidates are Abbas Ali from Awami League and Professor Sirajul Islam from BNP.

In addition to these two-party nominated candidates, five more Mayoral candidates have also submitted their nomination papers as the independent candidates. Of them, three are local AL leaders and two are Jamaat leaders.

According to sources, more Mayoral candidates for participating in the elections of Kantakhali Municipality were active from the ruling AL. Specially, the AL group against incumbent Mayor Abbas Ali is in hard stance from a long time. Three of them have submitted their nomination papers to contest the elections independently.

These three AL rebel leaders are Organising Secretary of Paba Upazila AL Abu Sama, AL leader Khoknuzzaman Masud and AL leader Abdul Motaleb. Two more Jamaat leaders have also submitted their nominations' They are Formar Mayor, Jamaat leader Professor Majedur Rahman and Abdul Hye. 

According to a local source of AL, the three AL leaders who have submitted their nominations as independent candidates are from anti-Abbas group. AL rebel candidate Abu Sama in this connection said, he is  with the elderly and trusted leaders of AL. He further hoped, among three AL rebel candidates, one is likely to contest the election and the rest two would withdraw their nominations.

But it is not yet decided who would be the candidate The most popular one will remain as the candidate, he mentioned. 

After submitting the nomination paper, incumbent Mayor, AL leader Abbas Ali on Tuesday said, as a Mayor he worked with utmost sincerity to develop the Municipality.

He has also made massive development in his Municipal area that is why the local party leaders and the people of the area are with him. He hoped, any rebel candidate contesting against him from the party will lose his deposit money.

Meanwhile, being a single candidate, BNP candidate Professor Sirajul Islam is at a facilitated position. He said, the residents of the Municipal areas are frustrated and cowed at the torture, harassment, cases and attack of the incumbent Mayor.

He hoped, there are a large number of BNP voters at the Municipality and said, if the voters could reach to the polling centres safely, the Sheaff of Paddy will be the winner at a large margin.

In addition to the seven Mayoral candidates, 10 nomination papers for Reserved Women seats and 39 nomination papers for councillors have been submitted.

According to the schedule of the elections, the sorting of the Nomination Papers will be done on December-3 and the last date of withdrawal of the nomination paper is on December-10  and symbols among the candidates will be distributed on December-11.

The polling will be held from 8-00 Am in the morning till 4-00 Pm without any break on December-28. The polls will be held through the Electronics Voting Machines in all polling centres.
