Raise awareness among youths for social media security: Experts

Role of the youths is very important towards ensuring security in social media as they are the major part of the social media and internet users.

Utmost emphasis should be given on creating awareness among the young generation so that they can be aware of their respective surroundings on the modern devices.

Experts and social media influencers came up with the observation while addressing a division level seminar related to social media security at Grand River View Hotel in the city on Saturday.

JAAGO Foundation and TikTok jointly organized the seminar supported by ShabdhaneOnline project with participation of around 100 youths from all eight districts under Rajshahi division.

The attending youths were given ideas and knowledge on how they can contribute to the society through making and uploading positive contents in social media.

They were also provided with information related to the safe use of the internet, the diverse use of social media, how to stay safe from cyber bullying and the importance of positive content through interactive sessions. Apart from this, they were educated about many dangers like- hacking, predation, radicalization, hate speech, scaremongering and the required steps to be taken to save themselves from such risks.

Three positive content makers, Mustarin Sultana, Mutajim Billah Rifat and Biplob Hossain, were given awards as recognition for the laudable contribution in this field.

Social media influencer Sakib bin Rashid, Assistant School Inspector ABM Saiful islam, JAAGO Foundation Assistant Director Esha Faruque and Senior Programme Officer Naziba Najmi Rashid spoke as resource persons disseminating their expertise on the issue.

They talked about how to combat the challenges of cyber crimes, including social media harassment, scams and fraud, and to help build more understanding of the youth about online safety.

The meeting was told that various types of cybercrimes, including social media harassment, cyber bullying, unwanted texts, scams, fraud while buying products online, pornography, and copyright crimes, increased in 2022 compared to 2021.

There has been an alarming increase in cyber crimes like social media and other online account hacking or information theft.
