Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has instructed top leaders of Jubo Mohila League, an associate body of the ruling Awami League for young women, to urgently take organisational action against those involved in crimes. Sheikh Hasina, also the president of Awami League, made the instruction while holding a meeting with Jubo Mohila League president Nazma Akhtar and general secretary Apu Ukil on Wednesday.

The name of Jubo Mohila League has come to the fore after its Narsingdi unit general secretary Shamima Noor Papia Chowdhury alias Peu was arrested on charge of running sex trade and other crimes. According to sources, the closed-door meeting was held between the prime minister and the two Jubo Mohila League leaders at Prime Minister’s official residence Ganabhaban on Wednesday noon.

During the ‘urgent meeting’, she instructed taking stern action against the leaders of Jubo Mohila League involved in crimes and misdeeds like corruption, and transfer and job lobbying. “Our organization’s general secretary Apu Ukil and I met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence today,” Nazma Akhtar told Bangladesh Post over phone on Wednesday evening.

“I’ll give you a list of the Jubo Mohila League leaders who are involved in anti-party activities. You must take stern action against them,” Nazma Akhtar quoted Sheikh Hasina as telling them. Intelligence sources said they are working to gather information and necessary evidence against at least one dozen Jubo Mohila League leaders and that they will submit the information to the Prime Minister soon.

The sources said the Prime Minister will later hand over the names of the controversial leaders to the top brasses of the organization following verification of the information through her personal wing. “We’ll take action as per information obtained from the Prime Minister,” Nazma Akhtar said.

Responding to a question, she claimed that she had opposed the decision of making Papia the general secretary of Jubo Mohila League’s Narsingdi unit from the very beginning. Narsingdi district Awami League president Nazrul Islam Hiru and general secretary Abdul Matin Bhuiyan had also opposed the decision, she said.

“But some leaders communicated with Jubo Mohila League general secretary Apu Ukil and lobbied for Papia. At one stage, I gave candidate for president post and Apu Ukil for secretary post. Thus Papia became the general secretary of Jubo Mohila League Narsingdi district,” she added.

Talking to this correspondent, Jubo Mohila League general secretary Apu Ukil said, “We’re really embarrassed over Papia issue. But it [the charges of committing crimes] is her personal issue.” She claimed that she did know nothing about Papia’s illegal activities. Nazma Akhtar endorsed her claim. Apu said they have instructed the leaders of the organisation to monitor anyone whose activities are suspicious.
