Probe committee formed over Baitul Mukarram pandal collapse

Islamic Foundation Bangladesh has formed a probe committee over Friday's collapse of a pandal on the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque premises that killed one person and injured at least 22 others. Secretary of the foundation will lead the five-member body, State Minister for Religious Affairs Sheikh Md Abdullah said on Saturday.

Abdullah visited the injured at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) this morning, said his Assistant Private Secretary Sheikh Nazmul Haque. The family of Shafiqul Islam, who died during the pandal collapse, was given Tk 25,000.
Abdullah promised to ensure proper treatment for injured Afzal Hossain, and shift injured Assistant Sub-Inspector of Special Branch Shariful Islam, 36, to NITOR.

The Friday’s incident took place shortly after Iftar, the breaking of fast by Muslims in the month of Ramadan. Fire service's deputy assistant director Jalil said that between 150 and 200 people were trapped when the pandal, measuring about 300X100 feet, collapsed.
