Bangladesh stands as one of the greatest success stories in humanity’s history, and its success is no doubt an indication of the resilience of the Bangladeshi people, reports BSS.
On this day, 48 years ago, through the sacrifice of millions of brave souls, a new country was born. And since then, Bangladesh -- born of much struggle and a bloody war of independence, but with the flickering hope of the values on which it was founded -- has risen throughout the next five decades, on the precipice of standing shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the most prosperous nations in the world.
Having said that, our country’s journey throughout these 48 years has been far from easy. It has gone through immense struggle -- be it famines, floods, autocracy, and our ever-present problem of corruption. But no one can deny Bangladesh’s place as a nation today, in the world and in the hearts of its people, a country brimming with potential, a nation full of opportunities.
Bangladesh stands as one of the greatest success stories in humanity’s history, and its success -- be it in providing food and shelter to the people, in reducing the child mortality rate, in providing education to its children, or its immensely successful economy which continues to boom at an unprecedented rate -- is no doubt an indication of the resilience of the Bangladeshi people.
This success would not have been possible if we had not learned our lesson from the oppressive Pakistan Army forces who wished to extinguish our spirit -- and one of the most heinous methods they tried to achieve that goal was perhaps their systematic killings of our intellectuals, the very best of our nation.
But through understanding the values upon which Bangladesh was founded -- that of democracy, secularism, equality -- did we manage to rise from the ashes of our martyred brothers and sisters as a nation that is stronger and is now well on its way towards true prosperity.
Of course, that is not to say Bangladesh will not face obstacles in the coming years. Corruption continues to be an ugly ever-present force in our governance, and poverty remains all too real for too many in the country.
But if we chose to honour the values on which the Father of the Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman envisioned this nation, our success is nothing if not inevitable. It is through our remembrance that we honour the countless people who gave their lives for this country, and it is through our success that we continue to ensure that they live on in our actions.
