Politician Shahjahan Siraj passes away

Former minister and Freedom Fighter Shahjahan Siraj passed away on Tuesday at the age of 77.
Shahjahan breathed his last around 3:30 pm in the city's Ever Care Hospital. He had long been suffering from cancer.

Shahjahan Siraj was one of the organisers of the Liberation War of Bangladesh. He was involved in student politics during the Liberation War and also was the general secretary of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) during the 1971 war.

President Md Abdul Hamid expressed deep condolences at the death of the prominent Freedom Fighter and veteran politician Shahjahan Siraj.

The President prayed for the departed soul and expressed deep sympathy to his bereaved family.
In the national parliament election, Shahjahan Siraj was elected three times under the nomination of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) and one time under BNP.

Besides, after the 2001 election, he was the forest and environment minister in the Khaleda Zia's government.
As a student, he was involved with the Bangladesh Liberation War. Siraj served five terms as the Member of Parliament for the Tangail-4 constituency.

He had been suffering from diabetes, kidney issues and high blood pressure for a long time. In 2012, his conditions were compounded with the diagnosis of lungs cancer, which was followed by brain cancer few years later.
He was admitted to Evercare Hospital after his health declined on Monday. He is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son.
