In Bangladesh, pneumonia is responsible for around 28% of the deaths of children under five years of age. This is quite disconcerting as it shows the chances of survival of children surviving the first five years since their birth are quite low. However, there is critical opinion from experts who believe that there is a need for a ‘multi-system approach’ since most health facilities are not ready to deal with this disease of lungs.

As per a report published in this daily, there are low-cost solutions that can be utilised by people to come to a solution of preventing pneumonia. This comes as a procedure to curb the child mortality rate of the country. With proper infusion of countermeasures and the vigilance of parents, the rate of child mortality due to pneumonia can be brought down.

Despite Bangladesh making substantial progress in the curbing of child death there are still around 24,300 deaths from pneumonia. This doesn’t bode well for the future of the country as the government is considering creating a digital country with ample resources. In order to create a country where smart and digitally adept people are taking the helm of industries and key sectors then the advances that have been made so far will amount to naught.

Above all, we hope that the government will find key interest areas where there is scope to improve and also to initiate workshops around the country on how to prevent pneumonia and child mortality based on the low-cost methods that have been researched by experts.
