Our government’s efficient foresight in implementing  life-changing policies for the disadvantaged people of the country have been commendable to say the least. Now, the government is set to expand the social safety net in the upcoming budget as the Covid-19 has pushed at least 2.5 crore people below the poverty line.

According to a report published in this daily on Tuesday, the budget will set aside Tk 3420 crore for elderly persons, up from Tk 2940 crore in the current fiscal. Some 97 lakh persons will get the benefits, an increase by eight lakh from the current year.

Successful implementation

of the policies will allow the

government to revitalize the

rural economy

If these policies are implemented, it will help to contribute to the reduction of poverty by addressing a range of population groups through different forms of assistance. Provision of income security for the elderly is mentioned. It will also generate money for working age men and women through employment and allowance. This budget will also provide healthy development to young pregnant women, poor lactating mother, widows, women left by husbands, transgenders, disabled, bede and underprivileged beneficiaries.

For proper implementation of this project constant monitoring is required from the government to make sure those who are actually in need of money are benefitted. Digital bank accounts can be used so that the beneficiaries can withdraw their money in a secured manner.

Amidst the pandemic and other natural disasters, most phases of the country’s economy has been severely damaged, including rural economy. Successful implementation of the policies will allow the government to revitalize the rural economy. A holistic budget should be implemented in the future so that in both, short and long term, the government can address the huge economic impact on the poor and destitute through resources and skills.
