Pattern of crime changing: PM

Blames social disorders for the trend

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said that the pattern of crime is changing at present. In addition to traditional crime, global crimes like cybercrime, money laundering, and human trafficking are gradually being strengthened. The crimes has been associated with unhealthy social disorders like terrorism, militancy and illegal drug trafficking. All must be careful to eliminate all these evils from society and to face all contemporary challenges.

The Prime Minister said that the continued success of Bangladesh Police in combating militancy is greatly appreciated not only in the country but also in the international arena. There will be no place for militants, terrorists and war criminals on the soil of this country. The Prime Minister said this while addressing a function at the concluding march of the 36th BCS Assistant Police Superintendent of Police (ASP) at Bangladesh Police Academy at Sarada under Charghat upazila in Rajshahi on Sunday.

The Prime Minister said that our government has taken various initiatives after taking office to improve service delivery, including overall development of the country and improving the quality of life of the people. The deserved achievements in sectors like agriculture, education, health, electricity, energy, foreign policy and relations, rural infrastructure, trade and social security has been ensured.

The Prime Minister said, “Our satellite launch in the space has also started with the launch of Bangabandhu Satelite-1. In communication sector, our breakthrough has been achieved. The construction of the Padma Bridge and the Metro Rail is fast approaching completion. In the meantime, the UN has declared Bangladesh as a fast developing country.

The Prime Minister said that in the last ten years, the government has implemented various activities to enhance the capacities of the police forces. Around 49,200 new posts have been created to extend services. She mentioned that necessary vehicles and equipment have been provided for the increased manpower. Referring to the formation of new metropolitan police in Gazipur and Rangpur, the Prime Minister said that Anti Terrorism Unit of Police, Industrial Police, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), Tourist Police, Naval Police, and two special base Security and Protection of Police were formed to address terrorist acts.

The positions of sub-inspectors and sergeants have been upgraded from third class to the second and second class inspector’s posts to the first class. The IGP rank has been promoted to the rank of senior secretary by re-introducing the IGP rank badge, which was given by the father of the nation. She said that in-service training centers have been set up. Also work is underway to set up four more training centers.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that the people’s problems should be looked at from a sincere and humane point of view. Police have to build close relationships with the common people so that they develop more respect for the police forces.

“You have to play the role of a pioneer in forming a police-friendly force through public involvement in eliminating crime from the society. The Fundamental rights, human rights and the rule of law should be given the utmost importance to the people while fulfilling their professional duties,” the Prime Minister said.

She reminded the new police officers, “A citizen seeks help of the police when he feels threatened. So, you have to strive to gain the confidence of the people through your service and human behavior.” Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived at Sarada police academy in a helicopter at 7.30 am. At the parade ground, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammad Jabed Patwary welcomed her.

She later visited the colorful parade in a decorated open jeep and received greetings. She distributed prizes among the Assistant Police Superintendents who excelled in various matters.
