Over 200 journalists have received Prime Minister’s financial assistance in a ceremony in Rajshahi on Friday to cope with the adverse impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, reports BSS.

Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust (BJWT) organized the cheque distribution ceremony at the conference hall of Deputy Commissioner (DC). Each of the journalists of Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj, Natore and Naogaon districts was given Taka 10,000.

Rajshahi Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton and Director General of Press Institute of Bangladesh and Managing Director of BJWT Zafar Wazed addressed the function as the chief and special guests respectively with Deputy Commissioner Abdul Jalil in the chair.

President of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists Molla Jalal, former presidents of Rajshahi Union of Journalists Mustafizur Rahman Khan and Akbarul Hassan Millat and President of Rajshahi Press Club Saidur Rahman also spoke.

In his remarks, Mayor Liton said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is media-friendly and she has brought most of the professional bodies including journalists under financial support as part of her relentless efforts to deal with the pandemic situation.

He also said development programmes have started becoming visible throughout the country and urged the journalists to highlight the development successes of the government through their objective reporting.

Zafar Wazed said this financial assistance will contribute a lot towards enhancing the level of confidence of the working journalists as the Prime Minister by herself stands beside the journalists with helping hand.

Addressing the meeting, Molla Jalal said all the journalists should be unified on the issues of Bangabandhu and Bangladesh, War of Liberation, non-communal society and development and there is no alternative to it in the country’s present context.
