A court has ordered to begin the trial of 25 accused in the case of beating to death of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad.

Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 Judge Abu Zafar Kamruzzaman on Tuesday dismissed the plea by the accused for bail and framed charges against all of them.

He said the case hearing will be continuous from September 20 to October 1 on every work day.

Abrar Fahad, a resident of BUET’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall and a second-year student of Electrical Engineering Department, was tortured and beaten to death in the room of a BCL leader on the night of October 6.

The next day, Abrar’s father filed a case against 19 students at Chawkbazar police station. During the investigation, the police arrested a total of 21 people, including 16 from the statement.

After a five-week investigation, Detective Inspector Wahiduzzaman filed a charge sheet in the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on November 13, accusing 25 people.

After accepting the charge sheet, the court issued arrest warrants against the four absconding accused on November 18. One of them later surrendered to the court.

The 25 accused in the case are Mehedi Hasan Russel, Anik Sarker, Ifti Mosharraf Sakal, Md Mehedi Hasan Robin, Md Meftahul Islam Jeon, Muntassir Alam Jemmy, Khandaker Tabakkharul Islam Tanvir, Md Muzahidur Rahman, Muhtasim Fuad, Md Moniruzzaman Monir, Md Akash Hossain, Hossain Mohammad Toha, Md Mazedul Islam, Shamim Billah, Moaj Abu Hurayra and ASM Nazmus Sadat, Istiak Ahammed Munna, Amit Saha, Md Mizanur Rahman alias Mizan, Shamsul Arefin Rafat, SM Mahmud Setu, Morsheduzzaman Jisan, Ehteshamul Rabbi Tanim, Morshed Amartya Islam and Mostaba Rafid.

The Speedy Trial Tribunal has an obligation to dispose of any case within 90 working days. If the matter is not settled within that time, the court may take another 45 days.
