A man was shot dead and at least 30 people were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers at Kaladhal village under Jagdal Union of Derai upazila in Sunamganj on Sunday morning. Of the injured, 13 received bullet-hit.
The deceased was identified as Amir Hossain, 45, son of Saidullah of the village.
Police, however, detained a man in this connection. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Derai Police Station KM Nazrul Islam confirmed matter. He said that they detained Faruk Miah, son of Haji Abdul Ali of the village from the spot along with a firearm. He said that they brought the situation under control.
According to the locals and the police, there had been a longstanding dispute between the two rival groups over Tk 10 to 12 lakh of the village development fund. The villagers had tried to settle the dispute several times with the help of the local UP Chairman Shibli Ahmed Beg, but failed. At last, they engaged in the bloody clash in the morning on Sunday. Amir Hossain died on the spot.
Delwar Hossain, 30, Razel Miah, 32, Elais Miah, 52, and 10 others, inclduing arbiters, received bullet injury. They were taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
