Nine persons were killed and four others injured when a trolley carrying sacks of paddy plunged into a roadside ditch at Sonapur-Barikbazaar area under Daipukuria union at the early hours of Thursday ( 19 Nov.).
The deceased were identified as Babu son of Erfan Ali of Baliadighi village, Tajemul Haque son of Sheikh Mohammad and Tajemul's son Mithun, of the same area under Shahbazpur union of Shibganj upazila, Karim son of Kabil Uddin, Milu son of Amanul, Abul Kashem son of Naoshad, Ahad Ali son of Azimul Haque of the same area under Shahbazpur union of Shibganj upazila, Ataur Rahman son of Reman of Laughata village and driver of the trolley Masud Rana of Sonapur village under Shibganj upazila.
Siraj Uddin, Station Officer of Shibganj Fire Service informed, Shibganj thana police and local people informed, after completion of reaping the paddy, 12 farmers were returning their homes in a trolley with paddy from the Barind region on Thursday early morning. On the way, driver of the trolley lost control of the vehicle and fell into a wayside ditch killing nine and injuring four others. The dead and injured persons were sitting on the sacs of paddy of the trolley. Six persons died on the spot as they fell below the paddy laden sacks. Out of six injured, one died on the way to hospital while two more died after admission in Shibganj Health Cpomplex and the Sadar Hospital. Condition of two more injured persons is stated to be critical.
Deep fog and dilapidated road conditions are responsible for the accident, local people said.
Farid Hossain, Officer-in-charge of Shibganj Police station informed dead bodies of the victims have been recovered and the injured persons have been sent to Shibganj Upazila Health Complex. Superintendent of Police of Chapainawabganj AHM Abdur Rakib has visited the spot.
