Navy officer beaten, MP Haji Selim’s son arrested


The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Mohammad Irfan Selim, son of Dhaka-7 MP Haji Selim, for beating a naval officer in Dhanmondi.

On Monday (October 26), RAB-10 arrested him from his home in Boro Katra Elkar in Old Dhaka at around 1.30 pm.

Earlier on Monday morning, the aggrieved naval officer Lieutenant Wasif himself became the plaintiff, naming four people, including Selim, at Dhanmondi police station and filing a case against some of them anonymously.

Dhanmondi police officer in charge (OC) Md Ikram Ali Mia said, “Irfan Selim (37), son of MP Haji Selim, his bodyguard Mohammad Zahid (35), AB Siddique Dipu (45), protocol officer of Haji Selim’s Medina group, driver Mizanur Rahman (30) and two / three unidentified persons were arrested in the case.”

According to the case statement, after Irfan’s car hit Wasif, he stopped the motorcycle on the side of the road and stood in front of the car and introduced himself. Then the accused started rebuking him from inside the car and then got out and beat him and insulted his wife.

He said, “They beat me and left me in a bloodied state. Later, my wife, locals and the traffic police officer of Dhanmondi police station on duty rescued me and took me to Anwar Khan Model Hospital.”

A total of five criminal offenses have been mentioned in the case. The offenses are: criminal use of force against a person as a member of an illegal assembly under section 143 of the Penal Code, illegal control of a person under section 341, injury for obstructing the work of a government official under section 332, force on a government official under section 353 and threat to life under section 506.

On Sunday night, Dhanmondi police assistant sub-inspector Abdullah Zahid said, “The car belongs to MP Haji Selim. He was not in the car. The car was carrying his son and a security guard. The police took the MP’s car and the navy officer’s motorcycle to Dhanmondi police station at night.”
