The Muslims across the country celebrated the holy Eid-ul-Adha on Monday with due solemnity, religious fervour and festivity. On the occasion of the Eid-ul-Adha, the second biggest religious festival, the Muslims of the country offered prayers in Eid congregations and sacrificed animals in the name of almighty Allah.

They also offered special munajat seeking divine blessings for peace, progress and prosperity of the country as well as welfare of the Muslim Ummah. The main Eid congregation was held at the National Eidgah in the capital at 8am. President M Abdul Hamid offered his Eid-ul-Adha prayers along with hundreds of people from all walks of life at the National Eidgah. Mufti Maulana Mizanur Rahman, Pesh Imam of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, conducted the main Eid congregation. On the occasion, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina exchanged greetings with people at the Bangabhaban and the Ganabhaban respectively.  The President and the Prime Minister also gave separate messages, greeting the Muslims in Bangladesh and all over the world on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha. A total of 582 Eid congregations were held in the capital. Of those, 312 congregations were held under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and 270 under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC). A total of five Eid congregations were held at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.  One of the biggest Eid congregations of the country was held at Sholakhia Eidgah in Kishoreganj. Earlier, millions of people left the capital and other major cities to celebrate Eid with their near and dear ones at different areas of the country. A large number of holidaymakers thronged different tourist spots across the country such as Cox’s Bazaar, Rangamati, Sylhet and Kuakata to enjoy their holiday leisure during the Eid vacation as the government earlier declared three-day public holiday on the occasion. State-run Bangladesh Television (BTV) and Bangladesh Betar and other TV channels and radio stations broadcast special programmes highlighting the significance of the Eid-ul-Adha. National flag and banner with the inscription of words ‘Eid Mubarak’ were hoisted at public and private buildings and different important points in the capital and other cities across the country. Important public and private buildings were illuminated. On occasion of holy Eid, special diets were served to inmates of government hospitals, prisons, orphanages, safe homes and shelter centres. The Eid-ul-Adha is celebrated on the 10th of Zilhajj month of the Hijri calendar. On this day, some 4,500 years ago, Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) offered to sacrifice his beloved son Hazrat Ismail (AS) who willingly submitted to the will of his father to please the almighty Allah.

But the Almighty in His benign mercy pitied Hazrat Ismail (AS) and instead sent a sheep to be sacrificed. To commemorate this historic event, the Muslims all over the world slaughter sacrificial animals and draw inspiration from the unique example of sacrifice to please Allah.
