N’ganj female FF receives Rokeya Padak

Freedom Fighter (FF) Farida Akter of Narayanganj was honoured with the Begum Rokeya 2020 award for her outstanding contribution to establishing women rights.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina handed over the award Farida and four others at a program at Bangladesh Shishu Academy on Wednesday, marking the 140th birth and 88th death anniversary of Begum Rokeya Shakhawat Hossain.

This year, Prof Dr Shireen Akhter in education, Brig Dr Nazma Begum in women’s emancipation, Monjulika Chakma in socio-economic development, Begum Mushtari Shafi in literature and culture, and Farida Akter in women’s rights categories, have been selected for the prestigious award.

“I am happy with the Rokeya Padak honour and it will help me move fast,” she told the Bangladesh Post.

Born on in Bhangarh area of Narayanganj Sadar upazila in May 23, 1952, Farida involved herself in the 1966 six-point movement in and the 1969 mass upsurge against Ayub regime.

During the 1971 Liberation War, she was higher secondary student at Government Tolaram College in Narayanganj as well as the general secretary of Dhaka district unit Chattro League.
