Former national head coach Khaled Mahmud said on Sunday that if Shakib al Hasan is not enjoying captaincy than it is high time BCB should look for alternatives, report agencies.

Shakib had stated quite a few times that he is not interested to lead the side and it raised quite a few eyebrows as it is not clear whether an unwilling leader can inspire the team or not.

“Shakib is a very good captain on the field. He has more better ideas than others. Some also say even better than Mashrafe. Without any doubt, he is one of the best performers in Bangladesh’s history. I don’t think anyone is better than him. But if the best performer with a super cricket brain does not enjoy captaincy  then it will definitely affect his performance. I think performer Shakib is more necessary than the skipper Shakib. So if he does not enjoy the captaincy, we have to look for an alternative,’’ Mahmud told reporters at his office on Sunday.

‘’When Shakib and Mushfiq were the captains, what was there age? They were 22-24. So if we make someone captain of that age, I don’t see any problem. I think captaincy matters a lot. We are still not that team, which will be carried on alone by the captain. We need more good quality players,’’ he said

‘’Now, Akbar Ali is captaining with under-19 and doing (captaincy) against India now,’’ he said.

‘’So the age cannot be a problem here. So if any young player can become the captain without any issue. We have not given yet. let’s see what happens appointing someone young. If Shakib does not want to be, then we can try with someone new,’’ he added.
