When various Islamist groups are being increasingly vocal against sculptures across the country, a group of miscreants on Wednesday night vandalised part of the 'Madhusudan De Smriti Sculpture' in front of the Madhu’s Canteen on Dhaka University (DU) premises.

The ear of the sculpture was broken and some other parts of it were also damaged.

However, the damaged part of the sculpture has been repaired immediately after it was found.

The identities of the miscreants could not yet be established.

Arun Kumar Dey, the eldest son of Madhusudan De and current owner of Modhu’s Canteen said, “Everything was fine when I left the canteen for home on Wednesday evening. But on hearing the news, I returned to the canteen and found an ear of my father's sculpture broken.”

“I informed Vice Chancellor (VC), the proctor, Shahbagh Police and the Chhatra League president, secretary about the incident. University authorities and police visited the spot. At midnight, a repairman came and fixed it,” he added.

Dhaka University Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani said, “The broken part of the sculpture has been repaired. However, the motive behind the vandalism could not be known.”
