LAHP holds discussion on prevention of child marriage

Legal Assistance to Helpless Prisoners and Persons (LAHP) organized a discussion meeting and winter clothes distribution program to prevent child marriage.

Dhaka North City Corporation, Ward No. 20 Councilor Mohammad Nashir was present as the chief guest at the 'discussion on the ill effects of child marriage and what to do to prevent it and winter clothes 

distribution program' at Mohakhali Dishari Sports Chakra ground in the capital. Citizens Bank Plc, Desh Television Limited, Legal Assistance to Helpless Prisoners and Persons (LAHP) and Chairman of Ethnica School and College, Supreme Court 

lawyer Toufika Karim, Advocate were present.

Discussing the ill effects of child marriage and what can be done to prevent it, the speakers said, 'Child marriage is a curse for a country. The law of Bangladesh sets the age of marriage for girls at 18 years and for boys at 21 years. 

Marriage of boys and girls below this age is called child marriage, which is a punishable offence. But despite the legal restrictions, the trend of child marriage can be observed regularly. Child marriage is a major obstacle to the development of the country. Although various steps are being taken by government and private to prevent child marriage. Despite that, awareness should be created among all about the evils of child marriage and what can be done to prevent it.

After the discussion, winter clothes were distributed among more than three hundred residents of Mohakhali seven-story slum. Various political and non-political personalities, teenagers and parents of Mahakhali seven-story slum and dignitaries of the area were present.
