Sri Lanka batter Kusal Mendis was hospitalized on Monday after feeling pain on his chest during the game of the first day of the second and final Test against Bangladesh.

He was taken to Evercare hospital in the city to assess his condition, a BCB official confirmed.

During the 23 rd over of the day, when wicket-keeper Niroshan Dickwella gave him the ball after Mushfiqur Rahim left the delivery of pacer Kasun Rajitha, Mendis took it. But he left the playing area holding his chest soon after.

Kamindu Mendis came as his substitute.

"Mendis had to be taken to the hospital for proper diagnosis and better management of his condition," Manzur Hossain Chowdhury, the BCB doctor said on Monday.

"He may suffer from dehydration leading into the match, which could be a reason behind his discomfort. It might be gastritis as a possible reason for his discomfort."

It is unclear at this stage how long he will be in the hospital, and on his participation in the Dhaka Test.

Mendis scored a stubborn half-century in the first innings in the Chattogram Test, followed by a quick 48 in the second stint, helping Sri Lanka draw the game.
